The Bishop Hannington Institute of Theology and Development (BHI) is based in Mombasa, Kenya and exists to train individuals for ministry in the East African Church. Its mission statement is “Equipping and empowering the people of God for transformative leadership”. BHI is led by the Rev. Martin Olando as Principal and Academic Dean.
BHI’s students come from seven Anglican Dioceses in Kenya, plus a few from neighbouring countries and some from other churches. It teaches a rounded programme of Biblical, pastoral and worship classes with an emphasis on practical involvement in mission and ministry in local churches and schools. In the last 25 years it has trained well over 300 clergy.
BHI also has a Business School providing development courses in management studies, accounting and human resources. They insist on honesty and integrity in potential students and their aim is academic excellence while maintaining an anti-corruption stance. BHI is looking to expand the Business School to allow the whole institution to become self-funding in a few years’ time although to achieve this it needs to build additional teaching facilities.
There is curently a total of 61 full time students for day and evening classes. This is made up of 18 for the Certificate, and 43 for the Diploma qualification in Theology, a very promising increase over the last few years..
BHI is also involved in interfaith and leadership training. Seminars have been conducted to educate people of different faith traditions of the need for peaceful co-existence and
tolerance.

Over the years St. Andrew’s Church has provided support to specific students: this has enabled third year student Ethel Mumba to complete her course and provided assistance for three second year students, Jackson Mwanzia, Meshack Cheruiyot and Elijah Mwathe.
St. Andrew’s also supports Martin Olando as he teaches the Systematic Theology and Christian Worship courses to students preparing for ministry. Martin describes his staff as “The Dream Team” as they work together in very difficult circumstances to provide the best training and support for all their students.
