Engage began in 1995 as Woking Schools Christian Action Trust (shortened to SCAt). It was established by Churches Together In Woking following Festival ’94, a Christian mission to Woking which included assemblies in local schools. SCAt celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2014 and took the opportunity of a name change to Engage to reflect its current aims and activities.
Engage works in about 35 primary schools, two secondary schools and Woking College. It currently employs one full-time worker, Shelly Blunden, and is currently recruiting a second. In addition, for the 2021-22 school year it is employing Carrie Brown as a part time secondary school mentor to help with the many referrals of children with anxiety and other issues.
Since its inception, Engage has presented the good news of Jesus to almost 50,000 children through their assemblies. In addition, the work includes running or helping with primary school assemblies, lunchtime and after-school clubs, storytelling, anger management groups, detached and mentoring work, RE lessons and “It’s Your Move” transition classes for Year 6 pupils. Engage supports Christian Unions, school staff and general school activities. It works in partnership with local churches and church youth and children’s workers and has a growing link with the Open the Book primary school teams.
As well as supporting the work financially, St. Andrews hosts the Engage office, located on the ground floor of our church building.
