“Common Purpose” event

The Bishop of Guildford, Rt Revd Andrew Watson, led the last of six Deanery “Common Purpose” evenings about Church growth at St Andrew’s on 9th March 2016. The event was for members and clergy of churches within all 25 parishes in the Woking and Runnymede deaneries. Nearly 200 attended at St Andrew’s.

Bishop Andrew presented the findings of a survey held last year on the health and growth of churches across the Diocese of Guildford.  Our ‘Common Purpose’ survey was filled in by around 1,500 people – the biggest such survey that any diocese has attempted,” revealed Bishop Andrew.

Despite recently published national statistics showing a small overall decline in weekly church attendance numbers, Bishop Andrew said this is not the case everywhere. Many churches are growing by adopting more informal and family-friendly styles of worship, and are holding services at different times.  “Churches need to adapt to respond to increasingly busy family life,” he said.

Bishop Andrew also explored how the aims of Common Purpose – growth in spiritual maturity, in numbers, and in community engagement – could be reached. With this in mind, the Bishop encouraged churches that are growing to share their experiences with others.

Bishop Andrew said: “It is important that churches work with their local communities and with other churches nearby. Church leaders should come together, to pray, and to share ideas.”
