The Daily Telegraph called this one of the best Christmas songs of all time. Simon and Garfunkel mixed together a version of the classic carol ‘Silent Night’ with a recording of the 7 o’Clock News on the 3rd August 1966 – the day the recording was made.

Yes, it makes this carol both potent and political. For me it always makes the point that Christmas is not an escape from reality, but God coming into reality. Light in the darkness, Hope in despair, Peace in warfare, Love into hatred and indifference.

Whatever we do with Christmas please, please do not relegate into a nice but essentially irrelevant time. It is far more than that.
